Report from Fletcher’s Cove, April 22, 2007 |
|
I want to post a quick update as Fletcher's Cove could be poised for a period of "bonanza fishing." This past week the river has been high, muddy and until the last couple of days, cold. Now, in a classic Washington flip-flop, the temp is ideal, the clarity is coming around and with a bit of weather luck, all the Spring fish should be rushing center stage. Shad, both American and Hickory are entering prime time spawning season for the next four to six weeks. Perch often have a big push up to Fletcher's in the late April to mid-May time frame. And Striped Bass season will start on the first of May.
Fletcher's has not been able to rent boats for the past eight days due to high river levels. We should begin rentals again in the next 48 hours. Old man river just has to settle down a little more. Even with the high water, Bryan Sirotkin of Laurel, MD landed a 16 ½ pound catfish from the shore below the picnic area. Shad have just resumed hitting darts this weekend as the water cleared and warmed up.
On Sunday the 29th, Fletcher's Cove will host a Kids Fishing day. Please check the main part of this web site for details. Remember also that Fletcher's offers bike rentals and has resumed canoe, kayak and boat rentals on the C and O Canal.
Hope to see you at the Cove.
