The Boathouse at Fletcher's Cove

FISHING REPORT

Report from Fletcher’s Cove, June 24, 2006

After a truly wonderful, long and (for a change) a climactically correct Spring, Fletcher’s Cove has slipped into summertime. The C&O Canal, Potomac and the surrounding parkland beckon those who wish to escape the sweltering heat, or the air conditioned office for the day. Schools are out, schedules are open, and you need not travel far to find a bit of oasis in the city.

As for the fishing, Herring, Shad, Perch and many of the Rockfish have journeyed back downriver leaving behind the resident piscatorial population. Summer anglers in the know come in search of plump Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, schoolie Striped Bass, hefty Catfish and the elusive Walleyes that prowl the deep with their needle-sharp teeth. The photos at the top show Ryan Jenkinson with the rewards of his patience. The Walleye weighed in at 7 pounds, 2 ounces. The Catfish was too big for the scale!

For parents wishing to take small children fishing there are plenty of Bluegills and small bass in the canal. Inexpensive tackle is available for sale at Fletcher’s Cove and lively worms are always on the menu. There are four brand new, beautifully built rowboats for hire on the canal. They are the perfect platform for kid-fishing and lazy picnicking. Turtles, herons and deer are usually around to watch you drift by. After the expedition one can reward the valiant effort with an ice cream bar or Popsicle on sale at the concession stand. Canoes and kayaks are also for hire if paddling rather than fishing is your agenda. Bikes for peddling the towpath or Crecent Trail are another option at Fletcher’s.

We hope to see you soon.
