Fletchers Cove Fishing Report, June 21, 2005

Now that Summer is officially here the mood at Fletcher’s Cove is morphing into one of laid back appreciation of the beautiful and historic surroundings we are lucky enough to inhabit. With the hectic fishing season coming to an end, it is time to relax a little, look around you, and enjoy the other options at Fletcher’s along the Canal and Potomac.

We offer brand new 21 speed bicycles for rental use along the Capital Crescent Trail or Towpath, Canoes along the river or canal and in the near future, kayak rentals as well. Fishing tackle, bait, refreshments and of course lots of words to the wise and “river lore” are also available.

Not to imply that productive fishing has come to a halt, I need to mention that many of our regulars are still angling with some notable success. The trio of Joe Fletcher, Mike Alper and George Furness have been trolling the deep ledges and humps and bringing up Smallmouth Bass, Rockfish and Walleyes, some definitely in the keeper size category. Just yesterday morning, Joe found two Walleye slow trolling on the Virginia side. Remember, we will carry the D.C. fishing permit all season long (ten dollars for non-residents, seven for residents).

Fletcher’s Cove is quite a bird watching mecca for those in the know. Sightings this Spring sure to make an ornithologist smile include a rare “urban Wild Turkey”, a majestic Bald Eagle searching for some sushi, and lots of Baltimore Orioles. Our springtime “out of range” Tundra Swan has moved on for the Summer, but lots of Herons and Canadians remain to delight the kids.

Speaking of kids and (kids at heart), I’m happy to report the return of the Ice (cream) Age to Fletcher’s. After a couple decades of absence, we now have a variety of refreshing frozen novelties to tempt the sweet tooth and cool the pipes of a hot hiker, biker, or boater. Stop by and we will most likely have at least a few choices to tempt you.

Call (202)244-0461 for any information you care to request.

Happy Summer!

Dan
